New Release: WIP’s Study on Prize Development for Renewable Energy Systems

CINEA has recently published the “Study on prize development for renewable energy systems (recognition and inducement prizes)” authored by WIP in collaboration with Ecorys and Carbon Counts. The study is the result of a 2-year project carried out for CINEA, aiming to identify, consult, select, conceptualise, and design five innovation prizes for Renewable Energy Technologies (RET) that could be launched under Horizon Europe or other programmes. The final five designed prizes cover the following topics:
  1. Prize for Lithium production from geothermal plants in Europe,
  2. RET solutions in EU Energy Communities,
  3. Fuel from the Sun: further Advancing Artificial Photosynthesis for Renewable Fuel,
  4. Advanced Digital Solutions for improved maintenance processes for RET,
  5. Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage.
Keep an eye on the upcoming Horizon Europe Work Programme in order not to miss the possible launch of the prizes and to send your application!

Driving Innovation: WIP’s Role in the Revised SET Plan Support Office

WIP and Ecorys are currently supporting the European Commission (JRC, DG RTD, and DG ENER) with the implementation of the revised EU Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan. One of the main tasks of the SET Plan Support Office is to establish five time-bound task forces on cross-cutting topics (namely:
  1. Circularity and materials substitution,
  2. R&I for societal needs,
  3. Digitalisation,
  4. Skills,
  5. Access to the market).
The goal of the Task Forces is to develop technical recommendations that feed into the work of the SET Plan. WIP will lead the work of the task forces on Circularity and on Access to market. Additional assignments of the Support Office, which will see the involvement of WIP, include reviewing of policy developments, capacity-building, and communication activities.

New Projects

HeatCraftHP: Bridging the Skills Gap for Heat Pump Professionals

The HeatCraftHP project officially launched with a successful kick-off meeting in Brussels, gathering experts to tackle Europe's growing need for skilled heat pump craftsmen. With a shortage of over 500,000 professionals in the sector, the project aims to identify essential skills, address gaps, and develop innovative upskilling programs.

A highlight is the creation of a workplace learning curriculum that blends theory with practice, using game-based tools like simulators for troubleshooting and system integration. By empowering craftsmen and craftswomen, HeatCraftHP aims to enhance heat pump reliability and performance, driving large-scale adoption across Europe and promoting sustainable heating solutions.

Skills4DHC: Empowering Professionals in District Heating and Cooling

Skills4DHC is a new European project designed to tackle key challenges in the district heating and cooling (DHC) sector. With a focus on developing skills and attracting talent, Skills4DHC will build expertise across a range of professionals, from blue-collar workers to civil servants involved in the DHC sector. Funded under the LIFE programme, the project kicked off in Munich in October 2024, with WIP Renewable Energies acting as the project coordinator.

Make sure to follow Skills4DHC on LinkedIn and X (Twitter) to stay updated!

ENABLE DHC: Advancing Efficient District Heating and Cooling Networks

ENABLE DHC will develop nine case studies of investment plans in seven countries (AT, HR, IE, IT, LV, SI, UA) with very different framework conditions. The plans will be developed in close collaboration with the DHC utilities with a focus, as distinguishing features, on digitalisation, assessment of investment risks and sector coupling. The impact of the activities will be enhanced through concrete support for 18 follower case studies in the project countries and thanks to an ambitious replication plan including national workshops, Pan-European webinars, a policy workshop and a final event, targeting DHC stakeholders also beyond the project boundaries.

Stay tuned for updates of ENABLE DHC.
