Autonomous Desalination Systems for sea and brackish water in rural areas with renewable energies
Duration: 2003 – 2008 ● Client: European Commission (MEDA-Water) ● WIP Role: Research and Innovation ● www.adira.gr
The ADIRA project addresses the vital issue of fresh water supply for rural, isolated areas. The main objective of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of autonomous desalination systems powered by renewable energy and to provide tools that facilitate their implementation in the Mediterranean.
Within the framework of ADIRA 10 demonstration units were installed in selected sites in Jordan, Morocco, Turkey and Cyprus. These pilot plants are carefully monitored for their technical and economic performance.
The ADIRA technical work included broad socio-economic research. The project studied the legislative and institutional conditions for autonomous desalination units in the Mediterranean, formulating recommendations for improving the framework conditions in the target countries.
