BiogasHeat

Development of Sustainable Heat Markets for Biogas Plants

Duration: 2012 - 2015 ● Client: European Commission (IEE) ● WIP Role: Market uptake ● www.biogasheat.org

The project supports the development of a sustainable heat market for existing and new biogas plants. It specifically addresses appropriate solutions, business models, strategies and promising services on sustainable biogas heat use, especially from excess heat of combined heat and power (CHP) plants. The project aims at bringing together key actors, initiating and encouraging the development of sustainable biogas heat use, therefore enlarging the biogas business scope.

pic-2BiogasHeat disseminates good practice references and develops field tests. Partnerships with key actors in the biogas production chain are developed. New solutions and concepts for the use of excess heat are promoted.

The BiogasHeat project has three specific implementation objectives:

  • To enable the economic and sustainable utilisation of heat from existing and future biogas plants that is currently wasted.
  • To increase capability in biogas heat utilisation in target countries through specific measures, including analysis of technical options, pre-feasibility studies, entrepreneurial strategy development of business cases and field testing to address key barriers.
  • To increase capacity on biogas heat utilisation in the target countries and in Europe through capacity building actions. This includes training courses, round tables, workshops, as well as information dissemination on good practices. This will be supported by the creation of a handbook on “Sustainable Heat Use of Biogas Plants”.

Within the BiogasHeat project, the following 9 European target countries are supported: Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Poland, and Romania. Partners from these countries support the utilisation of excess heat on national, regional, and local level.
